Watercolour Mosaics

I love painting mosaics in my A4 Moleskine watercolour book. There's something really soothing about filling in simple shapes with colour and even in drawing the shapes with a ruler and a circle template. It has something to do with focus and precision and, yes, control. I may have said it before, but this kind of art is perfect if you are a total control freak!

I also think it calms the mind if your head is racing. I even use it for that on purpose sometimes. My head is always full of ideas and thoughts and sometimes you just need a break from yourself. That's a good time to grab my ruler and mechanical pen and start drawing a grid and then colouring it in with a small brush and the really good watercolour.

Here are some pages I've done lately:

It's also a really good way to try out new colour combinations. My favorites in this batch are the second and the third one. They just work somehow.

I'm curious if you ever use your art just to calm your busy mind or to get some focus. Let me know about it in the comments if you like.

Wishing you all a wonderful and artsy day!

  1. These are lovely. I love the precision. You have inspired me to try and do something precise. Lately I have been very stressed out due to a family situation that is beyond my control. So, yes. I have been trying different ways of calming my mind in order to cope. It has unleashed some new work which I was quite surprised by actually.

    1. I like what I see you do on instagram, but I don't know if that's what you're referring to.
I hope your family situation gets better soon. Wishing you well.

    1. Yep, sometimes it's nice to limit yourself to something precise and specific. I really enjoy doing these.

  3. Oh I am often so overwhelmed by all those thoughts chattering in my mind, even if they are kind of positive/interesting. For a while sitting meditation has been my go-to-help but the last couple of days sketching and then colouring in have become the top 1 way to calm and structure my mind. I even stopped my resistance against adult coloring books (some of them at least) after coming across those by Zoé de las Cases or Daria Song ...
Seeing your mosaics makes me want to try this, too. My favourite is the 2nd from top.

    2. I'm thinking adult colouring books would indeed be very relaxing. I actually buy them a lot, but just because I love the line drawings in them and use them for inspiration. I might actually want to colour one some day, haha.
As for the busy head, oh don't get me started. Sometimes I'm just wide awake in the middle of the night from my own ideas. It's not like I'm worrying or anything, I just want to DO something. Often I go into my studio then and paint a little and it helps. Those nights are often followed by long mornings in bed, haha.

  4. Love your watercolors and think that it would calm my mind by doing something like that, however first I always turn to working on my plastic canvas [it calms me as well.] I can't tell you how much I always love to see what new patterns you come up. They're awesome!

  6. Hi Castje, Art is the only thing that calms my mind besides reading a book or watching a movie. It's the one activity I can go to and feel completely free with no rules and no obstacles. It's totally uninhibited and I can try out all the ideas that might pop into my head as I'm creating. I don't always love the final creation, but it is part of me and most of all I had fun doing it!

    1. Isn't it wonderful to have something like that? And the good thing is, you can take it with you everywhere and you'll never be too old for it either. ;-)
