Birds of a feather

A while ago I started working on a new altered book journal. It will probably be used when my current jounal is filled up.

To be able to use a book for a journal you have to tear out a lot of pages, otherwise there's just no room for collage.

Now it so happens that the pages I tore out were gorgeous paper. Thick and luscious, almost like fabric. I couldn't resist using two of them right away for a couple of mixed media pieces.

This is what became of them. As you can see it also gave me the opportunity to use some of my stencils, stitch through paper and...draw some birds. A win win win win situation!

  1. I like the combination of stitching, paint and collage -- it looks very textural, like I could reach out and touch it. I have tons (literally) of book pages, left over from when I turn books into Kindle cases. BTW, what kind of paper did you mount these on?

    1. The paper that they're backed on is very textured thick paper that came with several packages of handmade papers I once bought online. Especially the brown is really nice. It looks like leather (although it doesn't feel like leather at all). I made several journals with these papers, you can find one here: http://caatjesartsystuff.blogspot.nl/2012/10/a-journal-for-kim.html

  2. These are wonderful! And have given me ideas for a journal that I wanted to make to honor my aunt who passed away in 2012. She was an avid bird watcher and traveled all over. I had an old leather folder that she kept music in for years and I was able to salvage two pieces for the covers and so far I have made pages from recycled magazines. But then I got stuck and now I think I have new ideas! Thank-you!
