Birds of a feather

A while ago I started working on a new altered book journal. It will probably be used when my current jounal is filled up.

To be able to use a book for a journal you have to tear out a lot of pages, otherwise there's just no room for collage.

Now it so happens that the pages I tore out were gorgeous paper. Thick and luscious, almost like fabric. I couldn't resist using two of them right away for a couple of mixed media pieces.

This is what became of them. As you can see it also gave me the opportunity to use some of my stencils, stitch through paper and...draw some birds. A win win win win situation!

From the Pattern Book

I was thinking the other day that maybe I like drawing patterns so much, because they are the ultimate art for a controlfreak.

Think about it: everything gets put in a neat order in exactly the way you want it. A nice clear repetition of shapes and colours.

To me life (and art) is often like a puzzle that I cannot solve. But my patterns? Those I have fully under control! ;-)

Only the sweetest cat in the world

My Peer is an absolutely lousy assistant, but he makes up for it by being simply adorable 24/7. :-)

Beach patterns

I love patterns. I love drawing and colouring them and I really enjoy things like pattern books, fabric design and graphic art. In fact I can't get enough of them.

But in the end I think the best patterns are made by Mother Nature. Here's some she made at the beach just so I could take a picture of them and share them with my blogsy people.

Mother Nature is cool like that. ;-)

Morning walk

In between the many storms, today is like a haven. Some sun and dry weather. I could finally go for a morning walk again as I love to do on my days off.

Tomorrow we'll have another big storm that will last at least 24 hours, so I made the most of it today and took a very long stroll along the beach.

Guess what? I also decided to take you all with me!  You're welcome. :-)

Drawing on gouache

A while back I bought some cheap gouache paints by Reeves. I didn't have big expectations of them, but last weekend I figured it was about time I gave them a try.

As always when trying out new materials I just filled pages with colour. I was pleasantly surprised. The paint is wonderfully opaque and has lovely bright colours. And I also find it rewets pretty well after drying, which makes it easier to set up a palette for a longer time.

So now I had all these coloured backgrounds what would I do with them? I decided to grab a white paintmarker and a black brush pen and just draw.

The flowers came from my imagination as did the dashed lines, but the girls and the clothes were done after my ever trusted resource: a mail order catalogue!
I really like the effect of the black drawings over the white dashes. What do you think?
