Tall Ships Races 2018 - abstracts, lines and close-ups

In my last post I told you about my trip to the Tall Ships Races in Harlingen at the beginning of August.

Being around all those ships and the harbor in general brought out my big love of lines and details and I took a whole lot of pictures just because of that fascination. Just the shape of masts, the lines of ropes, or the way little details looked up close is an endless source of beauty for me.

So here is a series of photos I took that day that shows things in a bit of a different light.

I feel like some of these pics could be turned into really interesting abstract paintings or drawings, but for now I'll just like them for wat they are.

Tall Ships Races 2018

The first weekend of August brought the finish of the Tall Ships Races to the port town of Harlingen. The Tall Ships Races are a sailling contest between larger sized sail ships that are also a training program for young (aspiring) sailors. You can read all about it here.

Harlingen happens to be the town where our island ferry reaches the main land, so it is very easy for me to visit. Having so many (mostly bigger) sail boats there plus the atmosphere of such an event made it a wonderful occasion to bring my camera and take lots and lots of pics. And so a day trip was born.

For your viewing pleasure, here is an impression of that photography trip I took the day after the ships arrived.

Now obviously not all pictures are of  'tall ships'. Some are just of the harbor area and the other ships moored there or just of the things in and around the harbour. But it gives a nice impression of how Harlingen looks on a beautiful day as the center of sailing attention. ;-)

The cool part about all those moored ships is that you can go on board and look around as well. Especially when it comes to the huge ships this was fascinating.

Being there also brought out my love for lines and abstractions and details. Just think of all those ropes for instance and the lines with flags on them or the many pulleys. This was the source of a whole other series of photos which I will show you in my next post.

Rainbow Patterns

Sometimes when I draw my patterns I like to repeat the same colour combination several times in different drawings, just to see how what that looks like.
Recently I became fascinated with rainbow colours, so I did five different patterns in my Moleskine XL notebook to get that out of my system. ;-)

All the patterns were done in felttip pens, as usual, and kept me busy for many hours, also as usual. I love the bright colours of these and how you can see that the same colour combination can have very different effects.

Island Pictures

Just some photographs of my beautiful island Vlieland, mostly taken when I was out on my many walks.

This looks like a black and white picture, but this is simply how gray that day was. 

Now this IS a black and white picture that was taken at night. I love how abstract it became.
