Grids, grids, grids

My love for grids continues. By that I mean grid paper (or squared paper as Moleskine calls it) that I can use as a guide for patterns and what I call grid drawings. I have two Moleskine squared books, one is the 'large' size, which isn't really that large and handy for on the go, and one is the 'extra large size', which really is quite large and is only used at home.

The following pages are from the extra large one:

Recently I have been combining my love for grids with a new addiction, which is listening to podcasts. I know there are people out there who can doodle while watching a movie or something, but I am not one of those, which is a pity because I love Netflix. Unfortunately I cannot combine two visual things and concentrate on them. But while I'm drawing simple shapes and colouring it is very possible for me to listen to somebody talking about interesting things or telling fascinating stories.

So now you can regularly find me on the couch with a sketchbook in my lap and ear phones in my ear while I play with colours and find out about things I never even really thought about. It's a very satisfying combination. Also, what could be better than being able to combine two time consuming things in a world where there never seems enough time?

So...if you have any tips on good podcasts, I am all...um...ears. ;-)

Wishing you a wonderful and artsy day!

  1. I am exactly the same. I cannot draw or paint or embroider, etc AND watch TV. I can listen to TV or to someone talking and also do any of the above, but I cannot watch. I never really thought about it until I read what you just said. I can't concentrate on two visual things at once. Thank you for giving me some insight into my own brain! :o)

    1. Haha, you're welcome! There's a lot of things I cannot mix where my senses are concerned. With me it also depends on the kind of work my mind has to do. If I was doing art that needed some problem solving and specific thinking I would not be able to listen to a podcast either. Just like I cannot really listen to music while I'm reading. On the other hand 'ambient sounds' are fine (yes, there's an app for that).
Drawing these patterns is more like the doodling you do on the phone or in a meeting. It's kind of mindless and then I can combine it with something that really needs my attention. It's weird the way the mind works.

  2. Me too!! And I listen to things while I'm doing something visual and vice versa - find something to do with my hands when I want to listen... :-)

    1. I love to sing out loud to music on my i-pod while I'm cleaning house. :-) I cannot listen to music or podcasts when I really have to work something out in my art or when I am writing, then it's just distracting.
